History and beginnings of a
world city
Hamburg was visited by 800 first
by missionaries. In the former
Hammaburg a fort with associated
church and missionary work to
secure against the heathen
Saxons, and was built under
Charlemagne. Already 400 years
later, the city of extensive
trade privileges and rights were
granted. As a founding member of
the Hanseatic League, the city
grew rapidly into a thriving
commercial center. The port has
been expanded and developed into
an important trading center
between the North Sea and inland
transport. In the turmoil of the
Napoleonic War, Hamburg was
still formally independent, even
as a member of the German
Confederation and later the
German Empire.

construction of St. Peter.
Another impressive building is
the warehouse district, the

Nicholas church, town hall,
numerous historic bridges, the
railway station and to several
museums, theaters and galleries
such as the theater in the
harbor, the Hamburg State
Theater, the St. Pauli Theatre ,
the German theater, the art
gallery or the opera house with
its world-famous musicals such
as Cats and Phantom of the
Opera.

district of St. Pauli, with it's
many nightclubs, discos, bars,
small theaters, peep shows.
Notorious road is the Herbert
Street with its brothels.

are held. The most important are
the port's birthday, the
Christopher Street Day, the
Harley-Days.
